Axiz

Sustainability Portfolio

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and to continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy. We recognise that environmental risks and opportunities may have an impact on the key strategic competencies that create and deliver value to Axiz’s business model.

Respectful

Axiz values diversity, respecting the aspirations and values of all stakeholders. This commitment to respect ensures that we consider different perspectives and work collaboratively with our partners and customers.

Ethical

Axiz adheres to high ethical standards, conforming to internal policies and external requirements from other organizations. This commitment ensures transparency, honesty, and integrity in our business practices.

Responsible

Axiz considers the interests of society, stakeholders, and the environment. We aim to minimize our environmental impact and continually improve our performance as part of our business strategy. This responsibility extends beyond profit to include social and environmental well-being.

Who We Are

Leaders in Sustainable Technology and Innovation

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented. However, all employees have a responsibility in their area to ensure that the aims and objectives of the policy are met.

Axiz will strive to become the leader in sustainable practices within the business units by maintaining an innovative environmental policy and positioning ourselves on the cutting edge of sustainable ideas, practices, methods and technologies.

We endeavour to comply with and exceed all relevant regulatory requirements and other compliance obligations.  Continually monitor and reduce our direct environmental impact, and wherever possible, include indirect impacts associated with our vendors and customers to understand and be responsive to environmental challenges and how they impact our business.

Through this policy and our actions, we seek to protect and build our reputation across all aspects of our business and incorporate environmental factors into business decisions and increase employee awareness and training.

We take cognisance of the threat that global warming poses, and, whilst not our dominant objective, we consider the need to reduce our carbon footprint as being of key importance. We conducted a baseline assessment in 2022, using an external service provider to establish our carbon footprint.

This assessment revealed that the biggest contributor is our scope 2 indirect emissions as a result of the purchase of electricity from Eskom. Consequently, any future reduction program will focus primarily on greater analysis and understanding of our use of energy combined with taking the necessary steps in implementing appropriate energy saving devices such as renewable energy.

Our

Green Initiatives

Axiz is committed to taking continuous action to improve the environment and conduct its business in an environmentally responsible manner. Adopting environmental standards and practices to minimise our impact contributes to our overall group mission.

Axiz and PRO Membership

Axiz is proud to be a good standing member with the following Producer Responsibility Organisations (PRO):

ERA’s vision is to assist Producers in fulfilling their EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) obligations in a straightforward, efficient, cost-effective, and measurable manner.

Our mission is to create a sustainable and equitable system for collecting and recycling Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that fulfils Producers’ environmental compliance duties while aligning with our shared goals for our nation, the environment, and humanity.

We are committed to establishing robust governance practices and promoting the growth of a sustainable and efficient WEEE management system in South Africa.

ERA’s commitment to enterprise development hinges on achieving core budget prerequisites through EPR Levy income. The present circumstances display substantial unpredictability in this regard.

We are proud to have so many established and respected companies as part of our EEE producer membership base – this includes well-known retailers, ICT players, and more. It is with their support that we can make such a difference in this space.

Fibre Circle is a government-recognised producer responsibility organisation. We manage extended producer responsibility programmes to keep paper and paper packaging, which are renewable and recyclable products, out of South Africa’s landfills. This helps to create a clean and dignified living and working environment for all South Africans.

Fibre Circle seeks to achieve this by:

  • By improving paper collection and recycling programmes across South Africa through targeted, measurable interventions.
  • By managing the EPR fees entrusted to us in a specific, auditable and practical manner.
  • By engaging with our stakeholders – registered producers, value chain partners, Government, at national, local and municipal government level.
  • By enabling research and development in the paper and paper packaging sector to support the circular nature of paper fibre and process waste.

As the registered producer responsibility organisation (PRO) for the South African paper and paper packaging sector, Fibre Circle has elected to collect EPR fees from registered companies. These fees are based on tonnages manufactured locally or imported into South Africa – whether as primary product packaging or secondary transit packaging – and placed on the South African Market.

The regulations define a producer as ‘any person or category of persons, including a brand owner, who is engaged in the commercial manufacture, conversion, refurbishment (where applicable) or import of new or used identified products.

The identified paper products are as follows:

  • Newspaper/newsprint
  • Magazines
  • Office and graphic paper
  • Corrugated cases and kraft paper
  • Liquid board packaging
  • Label backing paper
  • Paper sacks
  • Multilayer paper-based packaging

Polyco is focused on making waste a valuable resource that works for our economy. We aim to grow the collection and recycling of all plastic packaging in South Africa and to promote the responsible use and reuse of this plastic packaging. Our mission is to reduce the amount of plastic packaging going to landfill and to end plastic waste in the environment. Polyco does this by collaborating with multiple stakeholders, by investing in recycling innovation and infrastructure in South Africa, and by educating both the industry and the consumer about recycling.

Polyco was established as a non-profit organisation in 2011 by a group of South Africa’s responsible polyolefin plastic-packaging converters to deal with polymer identification codes 2, 4, 5 and 7 and has recently increased our scope of our activities to now include the representation of all plastic packaging polymer types under mandatory EPR. We are funded by our members, who are passionate about the environment and are committed to realising a clean South Africa. Our members pay a fee for every tonne of virgin polymer purchased from either local or overseas raw material suppliers, and in turn, we ensure that their extended producer responsibilities are performed by Polyco.

Our recent merger with Polystyrene Packaging Council and Vinyl Loop has strengthened Polyco’s position and we are now a one-stop-shop for all plastic packaging types, increasing our support to producers, retailers and brand owners under EPR.

Enterprises that want to make a positive impact on the planet while ensuring long-term financial stability need the right combination of strategic partnerships and AI-infused technology to put their business sustainability goals into action.
